Etho I think it’s worth just to make wooden slabs for walking in the
surface. you get 12 steps (6 planks) of terrain level changes, while the
ladder only 9.

Why do people use slabs for moving up? Stairs are much more efficient, up
on a 1:1.

I would definitely get the diamonds (and iron armor, etc.) BEFORE going for
the record. Not only would you be better prepared for battling mobs with
armor, but if you find a dungeon while underground, you may not need to go
back out anyways
