tyken replace the GLSL with the alpha water shader mod, it makes water look nice, but i dont like the GLSL..

2 mods you might consider:
The first, perhaps you could switch from TMI to NEI? If you have a problem remembering recipes and such, it becomes a lot easier.
The second, you might not like at all, but with your treks throughout your world, you might like a minimap. Either Rei’s or Zan’s, but Rei’s is more common. I say you might not like it because it has an entity radar and waypoints, but those are both toggleable.

By the way, the maker of the original glsl shader this was moddeled off has made another shader, which kind of adds depth to blocks, like the ores stand out of the block almost. Check it out.

Tyken. install the ”normal” version of the mod to fix the dark insides of houses. i have no idea why it’s like that with the ultra version and not the normal version.

Try out Control Pack (i can’t post links here), it makes everything much more handy in survival, which doesn’t change the game at all

do not take NEI it has VERY many bugs. like where you can only use it for showing recipes.

NEI has the ability to look just at recipes or cheat, just go to the options or config file

You could add Timber to your game. It makes gathering wood easier, but i see it only as a way to make the GAME more realistic.Easier wood harvest is not the case here…
