Oh and for doom ports – your basic port is chocolate doom, emulates it down to basically everything. prboom+ is the port of choice for demoing, and boom compatible is one of the standard formats to map in these days. (g)zdoom is good for playing with nice graphics and lots of features, while doomsday has probably the best graphics options. Eternity is another port, that supports 3D floors and portals. Zdaemon, Skulltag, and odamex are the multiplayer ports. You should check out heretic and hexen

Doom did not use mp3s. What you hear are fan-made versions of the MIDI songs. Just pointing that out. Now I gotta find and play this :)
