You can let them fall and than send them with a water stream to lava wiht hoppers und them, this is much fast than drowning!

It’s not a fair trade a single chest of sand is 1728 sand but that would take up more than 1/3 the shovels durability but one diamond you get out of it will only fix the spade by about 1/4 so it’s a bad trade on your part. If you want to profit off that you would need to trade 2 diamonds a single chest
