I think you are able to build without supports if there is a background
(underground), but if you are above ground where there isn’t a background,
you need supports. (Not positive though.)

I started playing the game today and I built a base around a fully stone
cage it’s invincible.

concert base,and a good way to get rid of the water,also a good defends

going off of the title screen and the fact that sooooooo much water is
constantly draining underground from the ridiculous amount of rain on this
planet, I bet the deep underground is some kind of water cavern system
like shown on the title screen. enough rain falls in this game to make a
subterranean ocean.
