i actually asked jeb about that – they want to keep the game balanced on servers so one player cant dominate if they have a spawner, while others dont have one.

caving is following the caves only collecting good stuff (iron, redstone, diamonds, etc). (branch) mining is digging out parallel strips and collecting all of it.

Just east of the village under the jungle at X=193,Y=11,Z=351, you will find 25+diamonds if you mine 10-15 block radius of this, hope that doesn’t spoil anyone’s fun. You do need to work for it though, lava and a crapload of caves in the area.

Bats should remain passive, but have some rare drop that is used to make a potion that make you fly for a moment.
