Maps are entities, and to many can cause lag, so be careful on how many you
place!

Look at sethblings channel, and search for message board.
Did it in 2 minutes with world edit. But you can write also and make a
public message board.

You could use image to map if your in creative mode because in survival
that would be cheating

You don’t need to make the map wallpaper in game, just use MCEdit if you
have it :) so it does not take many resources.

you could re texture the map with real life 8 bit pictures to put on your
wall. and make a wallpaper texture pack
