I made a 4 way ceiling block switcher. Its just a Plane of patterned colored wools that slides around as a tile 1 block north south east and west by inward facing pistons on the walls. Then downward facing pistons above the tile push sections of the tile down though holes. The largest I can make it is 4×4 with spacing just like yours.

I think it can be much simpler? Like using 4 pistons for 2 glowstone blocks?
