The checkpoint system Is tripwires connected to command blocks, the beacons are just there to make it look good and to make it easier to locate them. I’m pretty sure that’s what it is anyway. A better question would be how does the clock/stopwatch digital system work? The map should be available to download too but oh well… just thought I’d answer you man.
