This was a test to see how quickly I could throw an encounter together in MapTool having never done it before.

There is not really any such thing as “most common”. However there is a torrent on the RPTools forums that someone created that has about 2 gigs worth. As for installing them, you don’t. All you do is go to File->Add Resource and point it at the directory where you have the graphics saved.
I should also mention that there is now a complete set of tutorials linked from the RPTools website. They are a little out of date, but still useful.

Is there a zipped archive of the most common ones used, as well as instructions for installing them on MapTool by any chance?

They are really everywhere. The Dundjinni forums, CSUAC, RPTools, RPGMapShare, Cartographer’s Guild.

@AIWAC MapTool is the Virtual Table Top component of the RPTools (rptools.net) toolkit, which is a slightly less ambiguous name.

As the description says it is a demo for MapTool. You can find that by Googling the name.

Maptool is a really ambiguous name. You get far too many GPS and topographical mapping applications.
