You can combine multiple texture packs. Its a bit hard to explain how. but there are many tutorials on how to do it
watch?v=ej2n-u53XBk is a tutorial by Monkeyfarm.
You could use Gimp which is free if you don’t have photoshop.

A .rar is an archive. Like i put all my files into one file. You need Winrar to unpack it.
If you have winrar installed, rightclick the file, hit extract here, And you will get all the files you need. Now you just need to copy that folder to your save location
