John, you can use torches! Look (quote from page):
You still cannot bring torches into the cave, as your wood got wet on the way down and is useless, but once you have grown a tree (without bone meal) you can use that wood for torches. Maximum of 64 torches.

See the only flaw with the roofs is its not a high drop for mobs so they have a greater chance to survive which means they can get you after you leave… Now now We need to start putting more thought in things kinda things or else the 404 wont be to long :D
