They would be a lot more useful if they could also detect what item was thrown onto them, then they could be used for adventure maps where you have to collect a certain amount of an item or for vending machines where you have an item as currency.

Only problem is it cant detect the difference between say iron and cobblestone. All shops will have to accept payments in dirt or cobble or another worthless block, because if they try and make iron the payment people will just use cobble instead.

They can be used to power dispensers, once they have the amount of items the shop wants.

the ideal thing to use for solar panels is to use them with an inverter so night: Lights On
day; Lights Off

You could invert the redstone wire to make lights activate at night.
