maybe because he likes the original texture pack. i dont use a texture pack apart form making the grass greener!

you should use a silk touch pick to grab some mycelium and make a small dirt patch in the water by your island and put the mycelium next to it so it spreads on the dirt. then you can have a few more samples at your base!

JC when you have torches underwater, you can got to a block (at least two blocks high) and place a torch. The torch temporarily creates an air pocket that boosts your air supply to full.
