Would this still work on an SMP server if the two ends were >128 blocks apart? It seems like as soon as the cart got too far away it would despawn if no one was around.

Cool trick for base to base transportation! I just uploaded a video on how to do small scale transportation, including an EASY elevator for moving the items up!

You could use the new feature where all blocks with an inventory, will give of a red stone signal depending on how full the block is. So once a chest has a full inventory, the system detects it and sends the next cart to a separate holding area
