I agree, IC2 is the best to start with, but if you have enough material, I recommend getting an advanced solar panel as soon as possible :D
Also, ftb is missing redpower and ee3 atm, so… MEH no automation 4 u.

I recomend starting with IC2. With batbox and generators hooked up to 4 machines. (Macerator, Extractor, Furnace and compressor). No need to automate for now. But try to make solar panel in place of generator. In my opinion this can be expensive if you want to have same EU/tick output as generator. Otherwise try to run generator on lava.

JC, a tip too stop lagging is to actually turn max power on to power saver or balanced instead. It helped me alot when I was playing FTB.
