It looks like a bug because sometimes it acts like instawire with no delay at all and the second time it got delay.

Yeah they are a bit random when it comes to timings. The same kind of random quirks you have with pistons, wires and torches already. The quirks depend on the time you placed the comparator, direction it is in, quadrant and its position. Remember to place a block on the far back to double its length, though.

Does it matter when in the cycle you switch it off?

I think they were supposed to be consistent (almost instant). I hope it’s a bug that gets fixed!

I tested the comparator speed compared to normal repeaters once, and I also got completely random results. Sometimes they seemed to be 2x faster than repeaters, sometimes 1.8x or 2.2x as fast, or anything in between.
Comparators are acting really strange.
