Even if they’re buried, light level(bl:# in f3) must be 7 or below in order for monsters to spawn. Light on the block of the light source is 13, and it goes down 1 every block.
Blazes can spawn even when there’s light around (8x8x2 area).

Lighting up the area will stop spawners even when they are buried…with the exception of silverfish as they can spawn in any light level (only on stone blocks), and ghasts. Creepers,skelies,zombies, and spiders can all be stopped with a few extra torches on the floors

Paul whenever you throw a splash potion of poisen/instant damage at a silver fish they will re-group and more will come. Dont use the potions!

They will stop spawning if the light level is less than 7 (a torch gives off 14, so no block can be more than 7 blocks away from a torch) no matter if the spawner is buried or not. It’s the “spawnable area” that matters. :)
