No you can enchant a pickaxe to this called silk touch and with sill touch you can get stuff that you would not get with a normal pickaxe like if you mine ice you get the actual block or if you mine coal you get the ore instead. It is really handy. I think the enchantment level is 30 or something.

only way to get ores chest is creative cause of the lapis ore and redstone ore
