You should make a lighthouse! Put glowstone in the top and have red wool spiraling around.

Ideas-
Portal: Make a whole down by 2, so animals down go back into portal. And so you dotn have tod estroy it.
House: A windmill.

at lava levels, did little holes in the walls or ‘pokeholes” you could probably find alot more diamonds. Also look at keirshars channel and he did a tutorial on a nice looking house, but its a little bit small

enclose the portal on the animal pen island because the animals can escape back to the nether.

I suggest a two story Pagoda using Netherbrick for the roof and Birch Wood inside walls with White Wool as the outside walls. Hang Glowstone from the roof edge like lanterns. Just pretend the walls are fire resistant ;)

Watch any of BDoubleO’s “building with” videos for all sorts of house ideas. Don’t know where the guy comes up with this stuff. Heck, any of the guys on the Mindcrack server for that matter….

Jc, if you place a water source in the hole you made in the obsidian and keep it there (in a way that it pushes you towards the obsidian) then once you break the obsdian the water automaticly makes the lava into obsidian, wich is alot safer, although, water has a spreading limit, once the water can’t spread anymore the water will push you into the lava if you aren’t carefull.
And on the houses I agree with burntfossil, build a windmill but I think you should somehow use bricks.
