I did the math for the second formula: NºItems= ((Signal-1)*InventorySlots*64)/14. I think it’s 100% correct and i’ve tested in minecraft lots of times.
EX: You want a singal strength of 4 in a furnace (3 slots) -> ((4-1)*3*64)/14 = 41.142
Rounding up: You need 42 items to create a singal strength of 4 in a furnace.

Then rather then just admonish how useless the comparator is, why not suggest something else that should have been taken up by that block ID, assuming that minecraft wasn’t capable of hosting hundreds of more useless blocks. Like what would -you- have put in?

Chaz, i made an elevator which is resource friendly, usefull and fast using the comparator. Without the comparator it would have been extremely big and resource intensive.

If you only count “vanilla survival” Minecraft as only going around and killing things, then yes, the comparator is completely useless. But if you use Minecraft for anything other than walking around killing things (like, for example, making a minigame on a server), then the comparator can be quite useful. Just because the comparator does not fit into your playstyle, does not mean other people won’t like it. And also, Minecraft is more than vanilla survival like you do it (see: custom maps).

a redstone clock with variable speeds would be 50 times more useful
I bet mojang had to try to think of the most useless redstone item from redpower that they could pick into the game and they sided with the comparator

several things. read your whole argument and i saw neither side put a valid argument towards whether or not comparators are useful. but those you are arguing with are at least acting mature and not just typing out obscenities and demanding people die for not agreeing with them. Also, reading through your argument, you never did specify vanilla minecraft survival. All you said is basically just slandering the comparator. You never mentioned survival until you labeled SheariousWool retarded.

The Comparator can be used also with the commandblock if you would use for instance the testfor command.
