The railcraft thing is still more usefull, it allows you to set the tnts timer per tick, and also uses wooden carts instead of iron, so right now its a lot more usefull and controllable.
It was always that way, when mojang implements a mod originated feature, it was always downscaled or les usefull/customizable, for example take a look at the original enderchest mod, 4096 color coded global chests vs 1 chest for each person. So the mods will continiue to be usefull as they are mode advanced.

It’s a weekly pre-released “preview” version of new versions of the game that let players see the new features added,play with them and also report any bugs found so that they’re fixed before the official release of the features.

Its like a preview to the next release of minecraft, so the public can bug test/stress test etc, and just give general feedback

It will be in vanilla as soon as they finish the next update. Right now it is in the newest snapshot to use right now if you want.

I was exaggerating a little,you’re right. :)
However,it’s still going to make a large share of tech-mod stuff obsolete.
The Railcraft things will probably be removed considering the exact same things are in the game now,instead I think he’ll just transfer the abilities of the mod version to tweaks to the vanilla version.

My client didn’t crash when I launched with an incompatible tp. It just loaded a different one.
