I just tested this. It does not work with lava. I think the issue is that the top blocks work as a BUD switch. Water flowing past this does not trigger, but lava flowing does. Therefore, it opens, but as soon as lava flows, they close again.

Since 12w21a you can put bucket of water/lava into dispenser to make triggerable water/lava source.
