could you have hoppers filling the hoppers to compress the transfer rate

This design should be expandable. The cart is occupying 2 blocks so you should be able to add two more hoppers on either side of the sloped track.

I’m fairly sure each hopper limits the flow through itself to 3 per second so that wouldn’t help.

would you be able to have a double chest with 2 hoppers beneath it? or does one hopper only pull from half of the chest? if they both pull from all of the double chest, you could have all of this coming from just one chest!

You wouldn’t be able to do that because then the hoppers would drain instead of fill.
