You need a Gold Pickaxe to mine the Demonite Ore (glowing blue blocks). You’ll eventually need to fight the first two bosses, Cthulhu and Eater of Worlds (EoW probably twice) in order to get a Nightmare Pickaxe, which is the lowest type needed to mine Obsidian. It requires Demonite Ore and Shadow Scales (Scales drop off second boss.)

The eyes can be found in random chests (like Paul found) or made with six Lens (from Demon Eyes flying around at night) at a Demon Altar (found randomly underground or in the corruption.) Eater of Worlds is with Worm Food while in the Corruption. It is made from 15 Rotten Chucks (Eater of Souls) and 30 Vile Powder (Dyrad during a Blood Moon) at a Demon Altar. Don’t think those are found in chests.
