It is also being used fairly widely now, based on what I’m seeing from other YouTubers, so hopefully it isn’t a bug.

You can test it yourself easily enough with two chests. When you place the chest above, you’ll need something to click on to place it since you cannot click the bottom chest. For example, click on the wall behind where the upper chest will be placed.
