Rails have changed a lot since then so the tutorial most likely doesn’t work anymore. Mojang decided it’d be a great idea to make mine cart stations more complicated to make. :/

Why don’t you power the departure with the same pressure plate as the “minecart-call”and a few repeaters sot here is a delay and the minecart stand sthere for one or two seconds so you can get in?

You should replace your button with a detector thingy. I can’t remember what it’s called, but it gives off a redstone signal once the player steps into the cart. I think it’s a bit advanced, but I bet you can do it!
