I dunno… I may be in the minority here, but I would still go for a diamond sword over a diamond pick. That’s what I always do with my first diamond, too. Then I go for a pick later.

If you’re planning on making a nether portal, you could always just use the mold method rather than mining the obsidian. It’s a bit labor intensive, as you have to lug buckets of lava back and forth, but it does mean that a diamond pick isn’t absolutely necessary.

Definitely head east. Well, slightly north of east, there’s something I’ve never seen before, a desert village built on top of a desert pyramid, very cool. Nice stuff in the chests too…. :D ***

Diamond pickaxe and then enchanting table. Now that we can trade to get almost every diamond item who cares how efficient you are with them unless you want a million Jukeboxes or Enchanting Tables

If you want to travel up and down fast you should make a 1×1 fall and 2 deep water. To go up faster you should use another 1×1 hole and put water in it from above, so everything’s filled with water. Then always carry a boat with you, place it into the water and get up the water quickly :) Easiest elevator I could think of.
