Hey Monkeyfarm when you were using default texture your tools, armor and everything in your inv except blocks and torches were your customized John Smith textures!!

I believe that the firework explosions are drawn in-game, like lightning, so there would be no way to edit them in the texture pack. The game drawing the explosions allows for the modular changes to the explosion. Some of the particles used *may* be in the particles file, but I haven’t checked.
