When using tnt make sure you are using red stone and pressure plates with it. That way you can detonate the tnt from a safe distance. You might also want to take a look at the equivalent exchange mod it makes clearing out land and even taking down mountains A LOT easier. I use it myself for my builds and i5 helps me out a lot.
