It increases the drop rate when you mine blocks like Coal and Diamonds. For example you get 1 diamond per ore, with the “Fortune (I,II,III)” Enchantment it gives your a better percentage of drops. I think you can get up to 5 coal from one ore and up to 3 diamonds from 1 ore. < Not sure about that.

Keralis, just a tip, take a bucket of water with you when you go mining, so when there is lava you can just pour water on it and then you will be safe :)
