Instead of a green and gray wool, use a trap door to cover the green wool
so when it’s flipped to reveal the green wool you know you have mail.
Doesn’t require you to be placing and breaking blocks and etc.

That’s nothing to mythbust , iron golems don’t get fall damage cuz that’s
how they are as well as they can’t swim but will not drown if underwater
for long time.
