For the storage idea, you could make a hopper filter out 5 different items: first slot = first item, 2nd slot = 2nd item, and make sure all of the hoppers have a total of 1 less item than the output powering 2 redstone. That way, you could make the wool stuff being only 4 wide. I hope that helps ;-)
