I love how he is like attemping not to do the spawner by doing the sand gen giving the lapis going to spawn for wood and the pickaxe xD

In 12w26a mob can not spawn on regular halflabs/staires but can on upside down halflabs/staires.

Also JL have an relatively old video call: “Tutorial: How to build…” (with world doawnload) where you can see for the sand duplicator you just have need 2 block of sand not 3 (for the clock3). So you may economise 1 layer of sand, as you are on a big project that can be convenient. :)
