blocks mined isn’t the measure of efficiency. Blocks seen per second is.

It’s probably slower to turn and do the poke holes and then turn back to
continue the tunnel than it would be to just plow straight ahead. And is
that reduction in speed greater than the efficiency gain in blocks seen per
blocks mined?
